MISE-EN-SCENE

I watched Criminal Minds, season 5: episode 16. I really love this show because of its mysteries and adventures of capturing criminals throughout the seasons.

The episode opens up with a deep space setting of an annual winter festival that is occurring. The viewers are able to see the whole perimeter along with most, if not all, the spectators attending the festival. After, the scene cuts to a shallow space setting. The viewers are able to see only a mother and her child, named Sarah, talking. The camera zooms in a little more to just the mother's face with the public in the background. She is distracted by a lady looking for her child and at the same time someone else is taking her child while turns around.

During the movie, it shows the place where the kidnappers keeps the child along with other children that they took. The children are kept in a basement with multiple beds that are barricaded with doors. The scenes in the rooms are shot in low-key lighting. The lighting reflects the glooming, depressing, and isolated situation that the kids are in. Then it switches to high-key lighting when the members of the behavioral analysis unit (BAU), Spencer Reid, Jennifer Jareau, Derek Morgan, Penelope Garcia, Emily Prentiss, and David Rossi, are discussing ways to capture the kidnappers and deliver the children. This lighting demonstrates feelings of hope and faith that the children are still alive and that they are going to be retrieved in time.

The wardrobe in the show is very professional since they are in the lawyer field. Most of the members BAU were their signature outfits, which consists of suits, and overall business professional outfits. On the other hand, Penelope wears her signature outfit look, made up of fun and colorful outfits which is a very opposite and unique style comparing to the rest of the members. Her style reflects her fun, quirky, and joyful personality, as well as her sensitivity even though her job consists of evaluating disturbing events. For staging, the actors on this show uses method acting by essentially becoming the characters and portraying them in their mannerisms, dress, upbringing, etc.
