Film Viewing Practice Essay "Agent Carter"

The movie "Agent Carter" incorporated many different film elements that made it interesting and pleasing to the viewers. The movie begins with a flashback scene of Captain America and Peggy. They used simultaneity when cutting back and forth between Captain America on the ship and Peggy. Close up shots where used to showcase the emotions of the two characters based on the actions going. Those shots create sadness, suspense, and fear for the viewers because the characters were crying, and it looks as if Captain America didn't succeed his landing. After the flashback scene, an establishing shot of a city came into view. This shot tells the audience where the movie is taking place, also set the mood for the movie. To me, it gives me a gloomy and busy, but also exciting mood.

The next couple of scenes takes place in an office. The office has a three-point lighting which illuminates the characters well while also having some faint shadows. A quick dolly shot is incorporated when the camera follows one of the characters after he picks up the phone. This can indicate that the character shown could have an impact somehow and turns out he is the chief agent. Another close-up shot of Peggy can be seen when she picks up a picture of Captain America in her drawer. Her expression reflects the feelings of sadness and loneliness.

Furthermore, after all the other agents leaves the office, lowkey lighting with large shadows is used to give a sense of mysteriousness, and darkness. Peggy takes a call which informs her that three to four agents are needed for a mission, but she decides to go alone; I suppose to prove her capacity. When Peggy arrives at the store where the criminals are, diegetic music can be heard inside the building with a song playing on the radio. Sound perspective is also used with the music because it can only be heard when the shot is taking place inside the store. This perspective shown a sense of realism because the song was only loud enough for the people inside to hear, thus cutting the sound when the camera is outside proves to the audience that the characters outside can't hear it. Simultaneity editing is also used during this scene because the camera cuts back and forth between the officer in the store and the guys outside with Peggy. Peggy confronts the bad guys and starts fighting, during this scene post-synchronization dubbing is used when the glass breaks and when they hit each other. The dubbing increases the intensity and authenticity of the actions. This scene also uses contrast editing to show the difference between inside of the store, which is calm and quiet, with the outside where they are fighting, which is chaotic. Moreover, A medium shot of Peggy is shown after the glass breaks.

Additionally, the costume for this movie were very professional, most wore business suits, because they are agents and work in offices, it also gives a sense of seriousness. The actors use method acting where they become that character and play them naturally in order to bring the role to life. Most of the scenes uses direct sound of the characters talking to one another, which are recorder at the same time of filming.
